Thanks for the Memories…

April 29, 2009

Well, Just like that it’s over. While Fly Fishing is my Bread, the New Jersey Devils are my butter. It looks like I’ll be eating dry bread for the next five months…

My fly tying vice will likely see a speed workout today, as I do all I can to forget about the last 80 seconds of Game 7 last night between the Devils and the Canes. While the loss is disappointing and disheartening, it’s important to look back on this season to remember all that was accomplished in the face of naysayers.

Zach Parise had another stand out season, and is a front runner for the Lady Byng. Similarly, Captain Jamie Langenbrunner showed real leadership this season, and deserves a world of credit for keeping the guys in line even in the absence of Marty. But wait, it gets even better! Patrick Elias earned his 702nd career point, making him the Franchise points leader! Congrats Patty, you’ve made us proud once again!

Another player to step up in a big way was Scott Clemmensen, and without his fantastic play this season the playoffs would have been over weeks ago. While most counted the Devils out when Brodeur got injured, Scotty had other plans. I hope his play earns him a fat contract as a starter, because any team would be lucky to have such a skilled goaltender.

And Finally, who can forget number 552. Mr. Martin Brodeur became the winningest goaltender in the History of the NHL this season, and I’ll never forget how special that moment was. He deserves all the credit in the world for his consistant outstanding play through the years, and anyone who puts this series loss on his shoulders is clearly delusional.

And so a great season comes to an abrupt hault. While the Cup is no longer on the menu for 2009, I can look back at the past nine months with a smile and say with great pride, Thanks for the Memmories fellas!

…And Thank god I have Fly Fishing to save me from the NHL offseason!
