Burn Baby Burn

Fun with Clouds

May 16, 2010

Clouds and I go way back. While most people pray for clear skies, I get excited when I see a partly sunny sky full of clouds. This weekend I did something unheard of, something so shameful that the Roughfisher would probably slap me silly. I left my fly rod in the truck and took to the river armed with nothing but cameras.

With four fishermen nestled nicely into Captain Deplo’s square stern Scott, there was simply no way all of us could wet a line. While I came to regret the decision almost immediately after I left the dock, something about laying back in the front of the canoe, sipping beverages and snapping pictures of my buddies was incredibly relaxing. At the end of the day we found ourselves socializing and cruising the river more than fishing. I guess we all need a break from the daily grind sometimes!

Tight Lines,

Reeevvveeerrseeee the Cuuurrrrssseeeee

And no, I am NOT talking about the Boston Redsox.

It seems as though my luck has finally turned. Last night I shook the demons off my back and ended my early season slump in a big way. Armed with every ounce of effort I had left, Jon and I took a cruise up the river to see if we could both find our first fish of 2010. What we found were two native Brook Trout, one beauty of a Salmon, and a number of sizable hits. It was an epic night, and one that I desperately needed. Even more exciting is the fact that these are the first brook trout I have seen in this stretch of the river in about 3 years. Did I mention these were Muskie laden waters?

Fat Brooky, and my first fish of the season!

The release of Brooky #2

Jon's beauty of a Salmon

A rainy Saturday most likely means we’ll work on getting the canoes river ready. Hopefully if the sky decides not to tear open we might even get some time on the water. Sunday looks promising for a big fishing day, so hopefully I add my first Salmon to the mix! Time will tell.

See you on the river!

And I….Nevermind.

May 13, 2010

I caught a Muskie!

Well, sort of. First I thought I caught bottom, then I realized it was a fish, then I dodged my streamer as it went sailing past my head. It made the water boil but once before disappearing into the depths, simultaneously dashing my hopes and dreams. What the &^%!

Still, at least I know there is hope. At least I know that the dark rain clouds plaguing my Spring fishing season have a silver lining. I hope.

So while I don’t have of any pictures of fish (again, I know-its a common trend) I did manage a pretty nifty picture of Captain Derplo with the sun fading slowing over the horizon. Gotta love the Saint John River!

We’ll see what the weekend holds in store, but I am pretty positive that Fishing is the only thing on my agenda. Nothing but sunshine, salmon, and all that relates.

See you on the river,

-Ben

She Doesn’t Talk

May 10, 2010

– Graduation has it’s perks, seriously. Once again, my parents have outdone themselves and given me the perfect gift: A spankin’ new Old Town Canoe. Do I deserve it? I’m not so sure. Regardless, the canoe I have seen in my dreams for years now is finally sitting in my yard.

My 20ft XL Tripper is a thing of beauty, and I can hardly wait until it hits the water. But before it does it needs a big-river makeover to be Up’North approved. Widening, cane seats, skid Plates, and some fresh Up’North decals should do the trick! Coupled with the 8 horse Johnson 2-Stroke and this baby will be my ultimate, go anywhere Cadillac of the river.

Love at first sight!

But what about a name? That might require a little more thought.

Leave your ideas in the comments section and who knows, maybe your name will appear on the side of my Canoe. Lets hear em’!

Looks like my summer full-o-fishing just got THAT MUCH better! Stay tuned for some pictures of the lovely lady when she is finally ready for her maiden voyage!

See you on the river,

-Ben

Feelin’ Foggy

May 9, 2010

– I’m still a little foggy after this weekends events. Two epic farewell nights with the college crew sandwiched around a lovely graduation ceremony, and a weekend full of great gifts and caring family members. I’m a pretty lucky fellow, there is simply no denying that. While I spend a little extra time preparing a few posts for the coming days, I leave you with some photos my brother took last weekend after a Spring downpour. Gotta love the view from my front porch!

Fish River

Summer officially starts now, which means more frequent posting, more photography, more good times, more fishing reports, more (hopefully) fish, and generally more greatness all around. Stick around, I’m sure we’ll have a ball!

Lets go Fishin’!

Horray 4 May!

May 3, 2010

– It’s that time of the month again (I know what your thinking)!

Catch Magazine and This is Fly have seriously stepped it up, not that the level they were presented at before was anywhere near out-o-wack. After reading/Listening/watching both from front to back, I can say without a doubt that May 2010 for both magazines ranks among my favorites. The video content in both issues is absolutely stellar, the photography is some of the best I have ever seen, and the stories will make you laugh, cry, and ditch your woman for a trip to the closest body of water ALL AT ONCE! Hold on to your hats, you can never really grasp the pure awesomeness that IS these eZines until you’ve experienced them first hand. DON’T SKIM, you would really be doing yourself a great disservice. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.
